CAR RENTAL
Parandjah rental tip: Compare the total rental cost, not just the daily rate. Before booking, check the security deposit, accepted payment cards, mileage allowance, fuel policy, and insurance exclusions. A “low deposit” offer may still involve an insurance excess or other charges; review the rental company’s terms before paying.
Choosing a car for your trip
Start with your route, passenger count, and luggage. A small car can be convenient for city parking, but check that the boot holds everyone’s bags. For a family or longer journey, compare luggage capacity as well as the number of seats. Confirm the transmission type before booking.
Consider whether you need a car for every day of your stay. Compare the rental cost plus parking, fuel, and tolls with the cost of transfers or public transport for your planned journeys.
Compare the complete price
Use the same pickup and return times when comparing offers. Check for airport fees, additional-driver charges, equipment hire, mileage limits, and one-way return fees. Confirm whether taxes and mandatory charges are included in the checkout total.
Check the fuel policy and return instructions. If you must return the vehicle with a full tank, allow time to refuel near the drop-off location and keep the receipt.
Deposits and insurance
A security deposit and an insurance excess are different. The deposit is money held or collected under the rental agreement; the excess is the amount you may have to pay toward a covered claim. Check both amounts and how the deposit is released.
Read the actual coverage terms rather than relying on a “full insurance” label. Check exclusions, claim procedures, and whether you must pay the rental company first and seek reimbursement later. Ask about any coverage you do not understand before purchasing.
Documents and pickup
Confirm the supplier’s driving-licence, identification, age, and payment-card requirements before paying. Check whether an international driving permit is required for your destination and licence. Make sure the main driver’s documents meet the supplier’s conditions.
Check the pickup location carefully: an airport listing may require a shuttle to an off-site office. Review opening hours, late-arrival arrangements, and the procedure if your flight is delayed.
Inspect and return the vehicle
Before leaving, photograph existing damage, the fuel gauge, and mileage. Ask staff to record any discrepancies on the inspection report. Check that the equipment you booked is present.
At return, follow the agreed parking and key-drop instructions. Photograph the vehicle again and retain your receipts and return confirmation until the deposit and final charges are settled.
Booking information
Bookings through third-party links or widgets are handled by the provider identified at checkout. That provider’s current terms govern vehicle availability, payment, cancellation, and support. Review those terms before completing your reservation.
Match the rental period to the route
For a Jamaica trip, write down the arrival airport, accommodation and planned day trips before searching. A stay centred on one walkable area may need an arrival transfer plus selected excursions. A trip moving between several bases needs a different comparison: include any one-way charge and time spent collecting and returning the car.
For example, if you arrive in Montego Bay but finish in Kingston, compare a one-way rental with returning to the original depot and paying for the onward journey. Confirm the drop-off address and opening hours. The airport name alone does not establish where the depot is.
A worked rental-versus-transfer comparison
Illustrative budget only, not current supplier prices: four rental days at $45 cost $180. Add $40 fuel, $30 parking and a $25 pickup charge, and the trip cost becomes $275 before optional cover or other fees. Compare that with your actual quotes for two transfers and day-trip transport.
Keep the refundable deposit separate from the trip-cost total, but check that you can fund it. If the agreement requires a $500 card hold, that amount may be unavailable while the rental is active. Ask about accepted cards and release timing; do not assume a debit card works because you used it for an online reservation.
Questions to send before paying
Confirm the main driver’s age and licence, card requirements, deposit and excess, included mileage, mandatory charges, and what happens if your flight arrives after the office closes. Ask whether the quoted vehicle is a guaranteed model or a category, and verify luggage space. Save the written response with the agreement.
Connect the rental to your wider plan
Start with the Jamaica budget travel guide. Compare an airport transfer if you prefer to collect a car after settling in, and check tour inclusions before paying twice for transport.
